Natalia, You're Gonna Make It After All

Note to readers: I had ten too many Cosmopolitans and I am listening to the Mary Tyler Moore theme song on repeat as I am writing this. This just may be the only time anyone ever sees me this emotional, this vulnerable. Please don't judge!

Ah, it has come. I have [un]gracefully turned into a twenty-one year old. I’ve never been one for lavish celebrations. I don’t party on boats, I don’t trek it to Vegas and waste my money away, and I certainly don’t get spoiled like a sweet sixteen year old.

I’m a living, breathing, party for one. But God knows sometimes solitary celebrations can be lonesome. Due to the fact that my current path in life is a bumpy one, I originally intended to just stay home with a nice bottle of Merlot, stuff my face with macaroons and wait for no one to call and wish me a happy birthday.

Clearly, things aren’t going my way: I don’t have someone in my life to share experiences with, I can’t find a job, I didn’t end up with the highest marks I wanted and I didn’t win any Bruce Springsteen tickets to see him tonight – the one thing I wanted more than anything!!! But I can sit on my fat ass at home, alone, munching away at those macaroons and questioning my self worth or I can go out tonight and prove not only to the world, but to myself, that I am still fabulous even with a few minor flaws. I don’t need a boat or confetti or a hundred friends to buy me shots, I just need myself. So, with that said, I’ll be out tonight buying myself some pretty flowers and delicious drinks because I don’t need someone else to do that for me. I will toast myself and take myself home when the sun goes down.

Birthdays aren’t about how wild the parties are, but how you truly feel about yourself deep inside. I want to turn twenty-one feeling as optimistic as ever, knowing that my silver lining isn’t all that far away. Like Kathleen Edwards sings to me so sweetly through my headphones... “don’t get down, good things come when you stop waiting around”....Happy Birthday to me!

  2. Three things.

    1) Is that red wall in your house? God, what a perfect backsplash for photos.
    2) Of course you're going to make it. You're Natalia, Booyah!
    3) My birthday was spent getting drunk with my sister, and her friends. Oh, and ONE of my friends. Parties are overrated after elementary school (which is when I stopped having them)

  6. I love this & I love you.
That last photo of you throwin up the "two to the one" is devine.
I'd go so far as to call it downright delicious.

  7. Merlot and macaroons, eh? Nope, that just won't do! The TRUE alone drink and candy is Baileys and Mars Bars. They make the alone time selfishly delicious!

You should have a guy to buy you drinks and flowers. Every girl should. I applaud the Destiny's Child "Independent Woman" mantra, but I think women are best served with a side of happiness brought on by a guy doing special things for them because he thinks the world of his lady.

And don't fret about the tickets! Other concerts await! Is summer time, you know!

You need to look for a job in infrastructure. Federal-Provincial budgets are geared for that: there will be jobs this summer lady!

  8. No.
No to Baileys and Mars Bars.
No to "side of happiness brought on by a guy".
    No. :(

  9. Hahahaha. So you're saying everything I was taught about candy bars and being romantic is nonsense?

You'd be a hard gal for a Casanova to pick up, you understand this?

  10. Good, Casanovas are highly overrated.

  11. Your new book sounds gravitating. Yes, gravitating. It has it's own tidal pull and affects the waves on shores. How many books do you read in, say, a week Natalia? And is it literature you stick to, or are you an I'll-read-anything-I'm-not-to-drunk-to-grasp,-and-even-then kinda gal?

  12. the new book i am reading is amazing. perhaps i shall blog about it. but i figure it'll turn into a very carrie bradshaw-esque complaint about men and relationships.

  13. If not for Sex and the City, I would have fewer laughs in my life. Blog away! Maybe you'll become a full time magazine columnist circa Carrie!

  14. I think theres just too many girls who are aspiring to be and do just that. So, I'd rather not compete.

  15. Hmmmm. MAYYYYYYYBE you should work on growing SUPER tall and just possibly breaking that glass ceiling, hmm? ;););)

I kid. No doubt it would take titanium ceilings to stop your growth Natalia.
